Mariners starter Wade LeBlanc (2-0) allowed two runs and four hits in five innings.

jets_041He loaded the bases in the fifth but struck out Justin Upton to escape unscathed.

(LeBlanc) gives you a different look every pitch. He moves the fastball around, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. Reminds me of the way Jamie Moyer used to pitch. He takes enough off and keeps guys off balance. We had some opportunities but he made some pitches.

Cruz homered leading off the fourth. Kyle Seager followed with a single and Healy launched a drive over the left-field fence to give the Mariners a 5-2 lead.

Trout cut the margin to two with his second homer of the game, but Edwin Diaz pitched a clean ninth for his major league-best 24th save in 27 chances.

Trout and Pujols homered in the first before Cruz tied it in the bottom half with a two-run shot to center.

Cubs: Maddon said RHP Yu Darvish (right triceps tendinitis) is scheduled to throw a bullpen in Milwaukee on Tuesday, as long as there wasn’t any kind of negativity while Darvish played catch Monday.

Red Sox: 2B Dustin Pedroia (knee), limited to 13 plate appearances this season, worked out in the Camden Yards training room but has not yet resumed baseball activities. Cora offered no timetable for the return of the four-time All-Star. … LHP Drew Pomeranz (biceps) threw Sunday, but woke up with a stiff neck Monday that could perhaps delay his return from the DL. … RHP Tyler Thornburg (shoulder) felt great after pitching one scoreless inning for Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday, Cora said. Thornburg will next pitch for Pawtucket on Thursday.

Orioles: All-Star closer Zach Britton was activated from the disabled list, six months after undergoing surgery on his torn right Achilles tendon. … Machado sat out with an illness that has been making its way around the Baltimore clubhouse. I could tell he was starting to get it yesterday, said Showalter, who has been battling the same malady. … With the return of Britton, Baltimore placed RHP Pedro Araujo on the 10-day disabled list with a right elbow sprain and transferred OF Colby Rasmus to the 60-day DL.

Red Sox: LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (7-1, 3.68 ERA) started his professional career in the Orioles organization, and now he’s won a career-high four straight starts heading into Tuesday night’s game against his former team.

The Patriots are the greatest team in NFL history. We could go down the list of achievements, but you can use Google for that.

jets_042However, it has become increasingly clear that the winning has come with a price.

Former Pats defensive end Cassius Marsh, who’s now with the 49ers, recently told Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle how glad he was to be in San Francisco because the Patriots don’t have fun.

That killed me, Peter said. That’s when I decided enough was enough.

That was 2007, a few years after he retired from an NFL career that began in a swirl of controversy when he signed as a free agent with the Giants in 1996. Originally a fifth-round draft pick of the Bill Parcells Patriots, Peter was waived before the start of training camp after New England received a flood of criticism for drafting someone with a troubled history.

Peter, who blames most of those problems on alcohol abuse, isn’t shy talking about his past, but adds, Some of it was true and some of it wasn’t.

Torres was frustrated enough that he said something to the ump, but then he immediately went back to focusing on the task at hand.

I think it’s a ball, but the umpire called a strike, Torres said. I don’t control that. I just take a breath and stay focused and try to do my job.

Torres worked the count to 2-2, then fouled off a 94-mph fastball that was in the same spot as the 1-0 strike.

And then this rising star showed his greatness once again by lining a base-hit to right field, Andujar raced home from second and the Yankees had a 6-5, 10-inning walk-off win over the reigning champs in a game in which they trailed by two heading to the bottom of the ninth.

You can feel (Torres) really just kind of slow it down and control the moment, and that’s something that’s stood out to me about him since he’s got here really, Boone said. And Peacock’s making pitches against him. Spoil, spoil, long at-bat where he’s on pitches where Peacock’s executing.

Panthers part ways with Russell Shepard

The Panthers have worked to remake their wide receiver position this offseason, which means offloading the leftovers from last year.

According to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers are releasing veteran wideout Russell Shepard today, after he refused their offer of a pay cut.

After Justify and Good Magic, No. 1 Quip is third at 12-1. No. 2 Lone Sailor is 15-1, No. 6 Tenfold and No. 8 Bravazo are 20-1 and No. 3 Sporting Chance and No. 4 Diamond King are 30-1 on the morning line.

If Justify runs his best race, the rest of the field could be running for second place.

He’s the best horse, said D. Wayne Lukas, who trains Bravazo and Sporting Chance. “He looks terrific, he’s doing well. I watched him all week. He’s going to be very, very hard to handle.”

Harris played in 37 games over five years at the University of Florida, making 102 tackles, four tackles for loss, a sack, three pass breakups and two interceptions.

Harris made nine starts at UF, with eight of those coming in 2016 when he made 73 tackles, four tackles for loss, a sack, two interceptions and three passes defensed.

Boston took a 2-0 series lead on the Bucks in the first round before dropping back-to-back games in Milwaukee. Smart came off the bench when the series swung back to Boston for Game 5. He finished that one with nine points, five rebounds, four assists and three blocks to help the Celtics pull out a five-point victory.

Boston is 8-2 since Smart’s return and has the Cavaliers facing their first 2-0 series hole since 2008, when they lost 4-3 to the Celtics in the conference semifinals. Boston went on to win the NBA title that season. cardinals_016

Aaron Rodgers on Dez Bryant: ‘If he ends up here, we’ll obviously welcome him with open arms’

Aaron Rodgers doesn’t think Dez Bryant will end up in a Packers uniform.

Bryant, a three-time Pro Bowl player, has been a free agent since he was released by the Cowboys in mid-April. Rodgers addressed the possibility of Bryant signing with Green Bay when he spoke to reporters Tuesday.

Lions president Rod Wood assured the team followed the law when it came to the new coach’s hiring process despite failing to uncover the indictment from more than 20 years ago.

Patricia addressed the media earlier this month, maintaining he “did nothing wrong” and insisting the story only resurfaced with the intention to damage his reputation.

He introduced language to legislation to regulate the industry that says anyone who opens a sports betting operation in New Jersey before the state enacts such a law will be barred from accepting future bets on games.

The thing is what I’ve seen, irrespective of the physical stuff on the field, let’s not try so hard, Monken said, via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. “He’s got natural leadership qualities. A toughness about him. Guys want to follow him.

It’s OK to fail. He’s human. It’s OK to be hurt. It’s OK to have that side of you. Let’s just go. You don’t have to try so hard. Guys will follow you. Just be yourself.

Monken’s stance echoed what wide receiver DeSean Jackson said of Winston in late March about trying too hard.

The Buccaneers offensive coordinator, however, understands the spotlight falls on certain members of an organization, whether they are on the coaching staff or a high-profile player.

I think the best way to put it is that in our league, there’s so much pressure put on the coaches and that one position, Monken said. “Nobody gets the credit either way for winning or losing than the quarterback or the coaches. cowboys_094

‘Last Chance U’ star John Franklin III signs with Bears as a defensive back

John Franklin III, a star from the Netflix series “Last Chance U” has signed a deal with the Bears after trying out at rookie minicamp as a defensive back and potential kick returner, the team announced Monday.

Franklin, who was a quarterback at Florida State and East Mississippi Community College, finished his college days as a wide receiver at Auburn and then Florida Atlantic.

Trading an elite player like Thomas is difficult when the expectation is that he’s worth at least a first-round pick with a third-rounder possibly included. A team acquiring such a player also would have to pay him huge money likely in the $15 million-per-year range so it’s a double whammy. That’s a risky proposition on a player going into his ninth NFL season. GMs wonder how long Thomas can play at his current level.

Of course, that level has been exceptional. Thomas, a true impact player, has recorded 25 interceptions and 10 forced fumbles over his career. But can Thomas, a 29-year-old player who has missed seven games over the past two seasons, maintain that caliber of play after he signs another long-term deal that takes him well into his 30s?

You hear the rumblings, so … that was my first thought – that it didn’t surprise me he thought like that, Foster told USA TODAY Sports. Knowing my experience of being an NFL player, it is of my understanding that that’s how they view the players anyway.

Vance Joseph, Broncos: Joseph got a reprieve from John Elway to avoid a one-and-done. But now that the GM has upgraded the roster, the Broncos need to do more than just be competetive. They should aim for first or second in the AFC West with the Chiefs (new QB) and Raiders (new coach) undergoing big changes.

Adam Gase, Dolphins: Gase has deployed his power over Miami’s personnel by letting go of players like Jay Ajayi, Jarvis Landry and Ndamukong Suh, hoping to create a better dynamic on the field and in the locker room. But that drain of talent will make it harder for Gase to prove his Dolphins are more like the 10-6 playoff team they were in 2016 than the 6-10 mess of last season.

John Harbaugh, Ravens: Team owner Steve Bisciotti admits the team has pondered moving on from Harbaugh. And now with Ozzie Newsome retiring, there is no longer a Super Bowl safety net hanging under the coach. With an offense undergoing a major transition and a defense in semi-rebuilding mode, Harbaugh is caught in limbo.ravens_155

Jaguars didn’t consider taking Lamar Jackson at No. 29

The Jaguars had few draft needs, which allowed them to go for luxury with the 29th overall selection. They decided not to use that luxury pick on one of the more intriguing prospects in the draft: Former Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson.

“I was not,” Caldwell said. “We did a lot of work on him. We saw him play here in his bowl game. He played here in Jacksonville. You know, he’s a tremendous athlete. He’s got a rare skill set in terms of what he can do with his feet. And I think organizationally if you commit to a player like him you can win. And you’ve seen it done with players similar to his skillset.”

Eventually, we may see it done for Baltimore. Possibly at some point against Jacksonville. Maybe in a playoff game.

Also, Wood told Snell, I am very comfortable with the process of interviewing and employing Matt. I will tell you with 1,000 percent certainty that everything I’ve learned confirmed what I already knew about the man and would have no way changed our decision to make him our head coach.

Patricia served as an assistant coach wbroncos_023_270eed9710c59ac3-180x180ith the Patriots from 2004 until last season, ascending to defensive coordinator in 2012. He won three Super Bowls during his time in New England.

Detroit hired Patricia after parting ways with Jim Caldwell on the heels of a 9-7 season in 2017.

I have been proud of Randy during this offseason. I’m very aware of how hard he’s working to get back in the league and get back on the field. Cowboys defensive end Tyrone Crawford told the Dallas Morning News that he has given the NFL his endorsement regarding Gregory. Dallas linebacker Sean Lee and safety Jeff Heath also reportedly backed Gregory with statements to the league.

49ers sign three undrafted defensive backs

The 49ers announced a wave of undrafted free agent signings on Monday and they added four more names to the group on Tuesday.

Three of the four players will vie for work in the defensive backfield. The other addition is former UCLA offensive lineman Najee Toran.

Safety Corey Griffin started 26 games for Georgia Tech and closed his college career with 50 tackles, three tackles for loss and an interception during the 2017 season. Cornerback Tarvarus McFadden was second-team All-ACC for Florida State last year after making the first team on the back of eight interceptions in 2016.

Likely motivated once again in a contract year, Richardson could do big things for a defense that already ranked No. 1 in football in points and yards allowed in 2017.

Mathieu will have to prove that he can stay healthy and bounce back from an off year, and it’s easy to understand why the Cardinals decided to get out of his expensive contract. But the Texans have little to lose here—and a lot to gain.

As a redshirt freshman in 2014, Barrett was getting Heisman Trophy consideration before suffering a broken ankle against Michigan. Cardale Jones replaced Barrett, and Ohio State went on to win the national championship.

But we can say the Cleveland Browns had the right approach by taking him.

They had to finally swing the bat on a quarterback early after trading away picks that were ultimately used on Carson Wentz and Deshaun Watson in the last two drafts, and in this case they went with one of the safer options among the top quarterback prospects.

The Browns could have selected a more physically intriguing quarterback in combine superstar Josh Allen, but Allen completed just 56.2 percent of his passes at Wy-freakin’-oming. And even USC product Sam Darnold will enter the league with questions about his tendency to turn the ball over. Meanwhile, the accurate Mayfield threw just 30 interceptions over the course of four years as a starter in the Big 12, including just six in his senior campaign. broncos_072_0380fba8ffdf82cf-180x180

Bucs expect to make “tough decisions” on offensive line

The Buccaneers signed center Ryan Jensen as a free agent this offseason in a move that will have a ripple effect on the offensive line.

Before we start giving all the qualifiers to Warner’s comments, let’s get it out of the way: We’re all thinking it was Oakland Raiders coach Jon Gruden — who seems to be collecting old free agents like he’s building a football ark — who he was talking to, right?

Now, just because Warner was talking to anyone doesn’t mean that it was ever a remote possibility.

And since Warner admits it doesn’t seem he was taken seriously, who knows how far along this idea ever really got.

I’m sure if you polled Pro Football Hall of Famers, they’ve all had fleeting fantasies of a comeback (it’s not even the first time Warner has floated a comeback possibility ).

“Really the only comment is I have a good relationship with the organization, and I will be speaking with them soon about Ereck,” Rosenhaus said, via the New York Post.

The Giants are on the hook for Flowers’ entire $4.5 million-plus cap hit this year, so it wasn’t a great surprise to hear they plan to keep him rather than cut him withbroncos_122_21be279738d7ad2f-180x180out getting anything in return. Rosenhaus could work to get the Giants to change that plan in a way Flowers couldn’t do on his own or at least serve as a conduit that works through the strained lines of communication that currently exist between team and player.

If your starting quarterback goes down, your second guy comes up and they’re all on the same page about exactly what timing they need to hit. Palmer is thrilled to huddle up with Darnold to help Wilson develop technology that he believes could potentially be game-changing for the sport — particularly quarterbacks.

Tony Dungy to be added to Buccaneers’ Ring of Honor

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced Tuesday former head coach Tony Dungy will be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor this fall.

Dungy, who guided the Buccaneers to four playoff appearances during his six seasons at the helm, will be honored during a halftime ceremony on Sept. 24 (Week 3 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers).

Tony Dungy’s impact on the Buccaneers and the Tampa Bay community is not measured in terms of wins and losses, Buccaneers owner/co-chairman Bryan Glazer said per the team’s official website.

Think about that for a moment. It’s a big reason why the NFL has maintained its foothold as the most popular sport: competitive balance. It’s tough to see the light at the end of some last-place teams’ tunnels, of course, and the reality is that most still have a lot of work in front of them. But when you start drilling down on some of the 2017 bottom dwellers, it’s also not that hard to see an immediate path to turn things around.

The charges are a result of Foster’s former girlfriend, Elissa Ennis, making accusations that led to Foster’s arrest on Feb. 11 in Los Gatos, Calif. Ennis has since recanted the complaints.

Foster, whom the 49ers selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, has remained away from the team throughout its offseason program as the legal process plays out.

General manager John Lynch said on April 23 that the 49ers are prepared to move on from Foster if the allegations are proven true.

I do want to be very clear, abundantly clear, that if these charges are proven true, that if Reuben did indeed hit this young lady, he won’t be part of our organization going forward, Lynch said at the time. That’s the standard we want on our team, that’s the standard we are going to operate under.

Additionally, Foster remains subject to potential NFL discipline under the league’s personal-conduct policy, which mandates a six-game suspension for a first-time domestic violence offense.sharks-020

End of an Era: Peter King to Leave Sports Illustrated After 29 Years

Peter King, a Sports Illustrated senior writer for 29 years and the founder of the popular NFL website The MMQB, will be leaving SI at the end of the month.

When Sports Illustrated was good enough to allow me to start The MMQB five years ago, I wanted to introduce a group of promising young journalists to the SI audience and give them a chance to develop into prominent voices on the pro football scene, King says.

When Roethlisberger informed the Steelers in January of his intention to play three more years, he suspected the organization was content to go forward with Landry Jones as the backup and last year’s fourth-round pick, Joshua Dobbs, in the developmental role.

So, I was surprised when they took a quarterback, Roethlisberger said Friday, because I thought that maybe in the third round, you can get some really good football players that can help this team now. And nothing against Mason, I think he’s a great football player… I just don’t know how backing up or being the third guy, who knows where he’s going to fall on the depth chart, but helps us win now.

Do we dare dream, or should be prepared for fall instead of autumn? Defense Notable additions: Star Lotulelei, Trent Murphy, Vontae Davis, Tremaine Edmunds Notable departures: Preston Brown, E.J. Gaines, Leonard Johnson There’s a lot of ways to measure a defense, and I’m partial to points allowed.

NFL Reportedly May Make Standing for Anthem a Team-by-Team Choice More The NFL is considering allowing teams to make their own decision whether to require players to stand for the national anthem, according to Mark Maske of the Washington Post. Owners are expected to vote on a potential change at this month’s upcoming meeting, including a possible league-wide policy that would require all players to stand. Other options include allowing players to remain in the locker room or keeping all players in the locker room until after the national anthem. Leaving the current policy, which features zero restrictions on player action, is also an option.

My guess is they will leave it up to the teams, a high-ranking official said of the expected changes. tigers_072-115x115
